In 2000, Christie’s aims to extand it’s Paris representation activity in the auctions organisation. For it’s sake, the company would like to find a central adress that could welcome offices, expositions, sales room and securitized reserves.

The power of our adress comes from its openness to the outside with its large windows, at the heart of the art district.

9 Matignon, an atypical place in the heart of the art world in Paris

It is the majestic grand staircase that captures the attention of Christie's management, drawing a parallel with the one at Christie's headquarters on King Street in London.
In 2000, the company moves to 9 Matignon avenue, in anticipation to the opening of the Paris market to Anglo-Saxon auction houses.
The first sale in France was in the 5th of december 2001, exactly 235 years after the first sale organized by James Christie in London. The lease extends until 2027.

What makes the difference : 

  • Location and convenience : Avenue Matignon is the epicenter of Parisian art, featuring numerous galleries.
  • Adaptability : in total, the 5600 sq.m occupied by Christie’s permits to welcome around 150 collaboraters, 1 sales room, 1000 sq.m of exposition surface and storage reserves for the artworks.
  • Flexibility : The collaboration between Gecina’s team facilitate the works realisation, sometimes, important to respond to the activitie’s evolution.

The unique feature of the building is its ability to accommodate the public.

During the first visit, it was the grand staircase of the building that caught the attention of Christie's management. It echoed the one at Christie's headquarters on King Street in London.
